Hiking the Swiss Alps of Adelboden and Pontresina

07 September 2015

It’s our 30th wedding anniversary today. What a great place to be on this day!

We start the day with a train from Pontresina to Bernina Diavolezza. Free, of course, with our Engadin Pass.

The day is sunny and clear but very cool. We decide that it is a good day to hike on Munt Pers. The trail description says that it is well designed and gets a lot of sun—both of which are important today because of the snow we must hike through to reach the summit.

There have been hikers on previous days and their boots have compressed the snow into ice. We walk carefully to avoid the ice (Remember, no crampons this trip!) and step on snow and rocks instead. We reach the summit in ~1 ½ hours and spend time on the top gazing at the mountains and glaciers across the valley from us. The fresh snow produces a brilliant white surface set off by the deep blue sky—and it is breathtaking.

It's an easy hike—except for the snow—and we take our time and savor every moment.

There are tracks easily visible in the fresh snow on the glacier and we can see the route that climbers have followed to reach the summit of Piz Palü. We even see a group descending the glacier and wonder if they were successful in their summit attempt?

We return to our starting point at the mountaintop restaurant and have our lunch on the sunny deck. Finally, it’s time to return on the gondola back down to the valley and to catch the train back to Pontresina. Hmmm…it’s late again. Since it is our last day in Pontresina we decide to look for souvenirs. A few postcards and a handkerchief will do.
