Hiking the Swiss Alps of Adelboden and Pontresina

25 August 2015

We manage to get a reasonable amount of sleep before getting up for breakfast. Then it’s a short walk back to the HB to catch the InterCity Express (“IC”) train to Bern.  We disembark in Bern, the capital of Switzerland, so we can wander around the Altstadt and visit Berner Münster, HeiliggeistkircheZytglogge Tower, Untertorbrücke (Lower Gate Bridge), numerous fountains, and other points of interest. Photography is allowed in some of the churches but not in others. We make it all the way to the Bärengraben along the Aare River only to learn the bears are not there because it is being upgraded. On the way back to the Bahnhof, we stop and have a leisurely lunch at a restaurant in the Altstadt.

We’ve really enjoyed walking through the Altstadt of both Zürich and Bern admiring the architecture and the very old buildings.

Then it’s back to the Bahnhof to catch the Lötschberger RegioExpress train to Frutigen and transfer to a bus that will take us to Adelboden Oey. Road construction leads to several delays as the bus heads up the valley and we arrive a few minutes late. Tom and Cuylor are waiting for us at the bus stop and we are quickly shuttled up to the chalet. The emphasis here is on up as there is a fair bit of elevation gain from the main road to the chalet.

It’s a beautiful evening with clouds dancing amongst the higher peaks. The setting sun makes the clouds glow as the valley slowly falls into darkness.

Tomorrow the real fun begins.
