Wildflowers and rain showers in the Inner Basin

Rain has become a daily occurrence across northern Arizona as the North American Monsoon is now in full swing. The most visual result of this, of course, is the abundance of wildflowers.

We were pleased with the wildflowers that we encountered on a recent mountain bike ride that started from Lockett Meadows and followed both the Inner Basin Trail and the Waterline Road. At the upper end of the Waterline Road is Abineau Canyon and we saw these flowers and many others.

On the fast downhill descent on the Waterline Road we stopped to photograph these.

Storm clouds began to gather and we made haste getting back to the car. Enduring a thunderstorm on a bike at these elevations is undesirable. We made it back to out starting point before the rain started — but not by much.

As we drove out of Lockett Meadows I could not resist a photo of this view. This tank has been photographed by many but usually on clear days with aspen in fall colors. There are fewer images of a light rain shower with clouds over the peaks and tiny splashes in the tank from the rain drops.

Mountain biking in Fruita, Colorado

It was a great weekend for mountain biking in Fruita, Colorado. Daytime temperatures were in the 60’s in the morning and 70’s in the afternoon. Abundant sunshine, blue skies, and light winds all contributed to wonderful conditions.

The Fruita Fat Tire Festival was held the previous weekend. We have attended that biking party several times in the past (great fun most years) but this time we were interested in riding without the festivities. Or the crowds.

So we met in Fruita for three days of riding. We split our time between the trails near Loma and those located off of 18 Road north of Fruita.

It’s been a long time since I have been able to get a photo of a collared lizard. Not that they are rare — they aren’t. It’s only that I haven’t had a good opportunity. Until this weekend when one lizard sat perfectly still and allowed me to take a couple of photographs.

Birds of a feather flock together…

A few days ago we did a mountain bike ride in Sedona. Near the end of the day we travelled across a large area of red rock sandstone located on Llama Trail. Carved into the sandstone was a series of small pools — some of which contained water.

We were treated to this gathering of birds drinking from the pools. After they had their fill, they flew off to their next destination — and we finished our ride.
